 Female genital mutilation (FGM) includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons

OR

The partial or total removal of the external female genitalia,or other injury to the female genital organs for non medical reasons.

It can cause severe bleeding and problems urinating,and later cysts,infections infertility as well as complications in child birth.

Increased risk of new born new born death.


FGM is carried out on infancy or between age 15.It is a violation of the human right of girls and women.


FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION IS CLASSIFIED INTO 4 MAJORS


1.Clitoridectomy:

Partial or total removal of the clitoris (a small,sensitive and erectile part of the female genitals)and, in very rare cases only the prepuce(The gold of skin surrounding the clitoris)


2.Excision:

Partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia majora,with or without excision of the labia majora(the labia are the 'lips' that surrounds the vagina)


3.Infibulation:Narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal.The deal is formed by cutting and repositioning the inner or outer labia with or without removal of clitoris.


4.Others:

All other harmful procedures of FGM for non medical purposes,e.g pricking ,piercing,incising,scraping and catering the genital areas.


FGM has no benefits only harms.

Some of its immediate complications include

-Severe pain

-Shock

-Haemorrhage(bleeding)

-Tetanus or sepsis

-urine retention

-Open sores in the genital region and nearby genital tissue
